What “genuine and subsisting” evidence tends to look like

Caseworkers are trying to establish that a couple has an ongoing relationship, especially during periods of physical separation — one partner working or studying abroad, waiting on a visa, or visiting family. Message history is one strand of evidence among several: it usually sits alongside evidence of visits, joint finances, photos and, where relevant, statements from people who know the couple.

What matters is showing regular, substantive contact over the relevant period, not simply the raw quantity of messages. A clearly dated transcript covering the key periods apart is generally more useful to a caseworker than an unfiltered export of everything.

Sample the periods that matter

If you’ve been messaging daily for years, exporting the entire history as one PDF usually isn’t necessary and can make the bundle unwieldy. Consider generating separate excerpts for the periods that best demonstrate ongoing contact — particularly time spent apart, since that’s when message history carries the most weight — plus a shorter sample from earlier in the relationship for context.

Page numbers for the bundle

UK visa applications are typically submitted as an indexed bundle, and caseworkers often reference documents by page number. Screenshots vs. an exported transcript

Screenshots are quick but they don’t scale: no page numbers, timestamps hidden behind “Today” or a time with no date, and no consistent format from message to message. A caseworker working through a large bundle benefits from a document they can page through and search, not a folder of inconsistent phone photos.
